My First Letter to Students
Dear students,
A happy winter vacation is over. You are welcome back to school.
There are some things that I feel very strongly about as a teacher so that I want to share them with you. I am not expecting you to understand everything I’ve written. But if you can get a feel for what it is that I am trying to do as your teacher, then I know we will be successful.
As a famous saying goes, well begun is half done. I really hope all of you will have a good start this year and make a good plan. In my opinion, the happiest thing in life is that we can make our dream come true. Come on, let’s work side by side for our wonderful future. First of all, I’d like to share two true stories about respect with you.
Cleaning Lady.
During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one:
"What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"
Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name?
I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.
"Absolutely," said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello."
I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.
You are lucky to have many good teachers. By the way, do you remember all your teachers’ names? And do you remember all your classmates’ names?
